Looking for heat pumps in Adelaide that will actually keep your pool warm without a shock on the power bill? This guide covers how a pool heat pump works, why inverter technology matters in South Australian conditions, how the two Guardian ranges compare, how to size a unit for your pool, and what installation involves. Beasley Pool Heating has been installing and servicing pool heating across Adelaide since 1979 and is an authorised Guardian dealer for South Australia.

Why Choose a Pool Heat Pump in Adelaide?

A pool heat pump does not create heat, it moves it. The unit draws warmth out of the surrounding air, concentrates it through a refrigerant cycle and transfers it into the pool water as it circulates through the unit. Because it is moving heat rather than generating it, a modern full inverter unit delivers roughly 5 to 7 kWh of heat for every 1 kWh of electricity it uses. Gas and electric resistance heaters cannot get close to that.

Adelaide suits heat pumps well. Mild winters, long shoulder seasons and plenty of sunny days mean the unit spends most of the year working in the air temperatures it likes. A correctly sized heat pump extends the swimming season from the usual three months to 7 or 8, and can take you to year-round swimming if that is the goal.

Inverter Technology: Smarter, Quieter Pool Heating

Older on/off heat pumps run flat out until the pool hits temperature, switch off, then repeat. A Guardian inverter heat pump varies its compressor and fan speed instead, so once the pool is warm it idles along at a fraction of full power to hold the temperature. That means lower running costs, less wear on the compressor and far less noise beside the pool. It also means the unit can be scheduled to run during your solar PV generation hours, which is where many Adelaide owners see the biggest saving.

Guardian Eco Pro vs Guardian Lux V

We install two Guardian ranges. Both are full inverter units with a colour LCD controller and a UV stabilised casing, and both are installed and serviced by our own team. The difference is what each range is built for.

Guardian Eco Pro

Guardian Lux V

Best for

Everyday family pools where value for performance matters most

Premium installs, noise-sensitive sites and year-round swimming

Technology

Full DC inverter

Full DC inverter with sound dampening and cold-climate hardware

Noise

Quiet

Ultra-quiet, noticeably quieter than standard heat pumps

Cold weather

Reliable through the Adelaide shoulder seasons

Built for winter operation in the Hills and cooler sites

Discharge

Side discharge

Side or top discharge to suit tight equipment pads

Controller

Premium controller, WiFi enabled

Not sure which one suits you? The Lux V earns its place if the unit will sit close to a bedroom or a neighbour, if you want to swim through winter, or if the equipment pad is tight. For most family pools the Eco Pro is the right call.

What Size Heat Pump Does Your Pool Need?

Sizing is where most heat pump installs go right or wrong. An undersized unit runs constantly, never quite reaches temperature in cooler weather and wears out early. We size on pool volume, surface area, target temperature and how far into the year you want to swim. As a guide:

  • Plunge pools and spas up to 25 kL usually suit a 9 to 13 kW unit.

  • Most Adelaide family pools of 40 to 60 kL suit 13 to 17 kW.

  • Larger pools, year-round swimming or exposed sites step up to 21 to 28 kW, or two units for commercial pools.

A thermal pool cover is part of the sizing conversation too. It cuts overnight heat loss dramatically and can let you run a smaller unit for less.

What Installation Involves

Most metro Adelaide residential installs are a half-day job. We prepare a level pad with clear airflow around the unit, plumb it into the existing filtration circuit with a bypass, coordinate the licensed electrical connection, then commission the unit and walk you through the controller. Every install comes with the Guardian manufacturer warranty plus our own workmanship guarantee, and the same team that installs it is the team that services it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a pool heat pump cost in Adelaide?

Supply and install for a residential Guardian unit depends on the size of the unit, plumbing complexity and the electrical scope. We quote fixed prices after a free onsite visit so there are no surprises on the day, and the quote includes a running cost estimate for your pool.

Yes. Output drops as the air gets colder and some units cycle into defrost mode below about 10 degrees, but a correctly sized Guardian unit will hold temperature through winter. The Lux V range is built specifically for cold-climate operation.

Guardian units typically last 10 to 15 years with an annual service. Routine servicing, balanced water chemistry and protection from leaf litter and debris are the biggest factors in how long a unit lasts.

They suit different situations. Solar is cheaper to run and lasts longer, so it is usually the first option if you have unshaded roof space. A heat pump wins when roof space is limited, when you want year-round swimming, or when you want the pool held at a set temperature regardless of the weather. Many owners combine the two.

Yes. We service Guardian units and most other major brands across metro Adelaide, with a 48 to 72 hour response time and parts in stock at our Beverley warehouse.
